More and more often, consumers head to LLMs for beauty product recommendations. And what do brands do? They &#8220;partner&#8221; with LLMs to study and analyse the prompts and get their hands on hyper-personalised requests.<br><br>When an influencer has a skin issue, they don&#8217;t head to their dermatologist. They don&#8217;t pause and reflect that maybe \u2013 just maybe \u2013 there&#8217;s something in their life going on that may cause the issue. Stress? Lack of sleep? Nah. They ask ChatGPT. The chatbot tells them to ditch one product for another. They go ahead and posts the results on TikTok. Now millions have watched the video and some probably followed suit.<br><br>Welcome to the new beauty industry. Where we&#8217;ve replaced doctors and common sense with a chatbot that can&#8217;t feel skin but can certainly sell products.<br><br><strong>It has always been an illusion of choice. Now it&#8217;s automated.<\/strong><br><br>First, they gave us 50 brands owned by three companies and called it choice. Now, they&#8217;ve built the ultimate trap: an AI &#8220;expert&#8221; that conveniently recommends the same conglomerate-owned labels over and over again. The data is in. If you type &#8220;best vitamin C serum for my dry, sensitive skin in humid climate who also hates waste and wants glass packaging&#8221; \u2013 congratulations. You&#8217;ve just handed them a roadmap.<br>They want you to believe that if the AI gives you a bad recommendation, it&#8217;s your fault. You didn&#8217;t prompt well enough. You weren&#8217;t specific enough. Your worth is tied to your ability to play their game.<br>If you think this is an organic development, think again. In February 2026, ChatGPT launched its ad pilot program. One of the biggest supermarket chains in the US is already participating. Ads are activated by specific keywords, for now clearly labeled. But make no mistake: the infrastructure is being built. Who&#8217;s going to guarantee that soon the &#8220;objective&#8221; chatbot will not be accepting bids? They are going to swear that your &#8220;personalised recommendation&#8221; is objective, but will you trust them to tell you that it is not the brand that paid most? <br><br><strong>No one wants an educated consumer<\/strong><br><br>Let&#8217;s be honest. A truly educated consumer is the beauty industry&#8217;s worst nightmare. A consumer that loves and respects their body and the processes in it is the industry&#8217;s worst enemy. They know that most &#8220;problems&#8221; are solved by sleep, water, diet, exercise, and a simple barrier cream. They know that a $200 &#8220;smart&#8221; serum is usually just expensive hydration with good marketing.<br><br>An educated consumer doesn&#8217;t need a chatbot to tell them what to buy. They can pause, reflect, and listen to their own body.<br>But that doesn&#8217;t generate revenue. That doesn&#8217;t sell product. That doesn&#8217;t keep the machine running.<br>So instead, they&#8217;ve built a system that makes you doubt yourself. They&#8217;ve created a &#8220;shopping research mode&#8221; that looks like e-commerce. They&#8217;ve invested in &#8220;generative engine optimisation&#8221; to ensure their ingredient lists are robot-readable. They&#8217;re running focus groups to figure out exactly how you&#8217;re using AI, so they can get inside your head before you even know what you&#8217;re asking.<br><br><strong>The takeaway<\/strong><br><br>We are racing toward a future where we outsource our most basic human intuition and common sense to machines funded by the very companies they recommend. It&#8217;s a closed loop. Refuse to participate. We believe you&#8217;re capable of pausing, reflecting, understanding that your skin is just skin \u2013 not a problem to be solved by the next algorithm.<br>Stop prompting. Start thinking.
