Citric Acid

INCI: CITRIC ACID
Type: pH regulator, chelating
Origin: Naturally abundant in citrus fruits. Cosmetic-grade citric acid is typically produced via fermentation of molasses or other plant sugars by the fungus Aspergillus niger, ensuring purity and sustainability.

What it does:

Citric Acid is a multifunctional acid that plays several essential supporting roles in cosmetic formulations. Primary functions:

  1. pH adjuster: Lowers the pH of a formula to the desired skin-compatible range (typically pH 4.5-5.5). This ensures the product is gentle on skin and that other pH-dependent ingredients (like preservatives and certain actives) function optimally.
  2. Buffering partner: Works in synergy with Sodium Citrate to create a stable buffer system that resists pH drift over time, maintaining formula integrity throughout its shelf life.
  3. Chelating agent: Binds to trace metal ions (iron, copper, calcium) present in water or raw materials, preventing them from catalyzing oxidation reactions that can degrade sensitive ingredients, cause discoloration, or destabilize the emulsion.

Why we use it:

We use Citric Acid to bring our products into the optimal pH range for skin compatibility and active/preservative efficacy. It is a behind-the-scenes guardian of both safety and performance.
