Bakuchiol

INCI: BAKUCHIOL
Type: Antioxidant, skin conditioning, better-aging
Origin: A meroterpene (a phenolic compound) naturally derived from the seeds and leaves of the babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia), a plant used for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. Obtained via solvent-free extraction or biotechnology.
What it does:
Bakuchiol is a plant-powered, clinically studied alternative to retinol that has gained recognition as one of the most effective retinol-like actives available. Primary functions:
- Collagen support: Like retinol, bakuchiol has been shown to upregulate collagen production and support skin matrix integrity, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of firmness.
- Cellular renewal: It promotes healthy natural cell turnover, improving skin texture, smoothness, and overall radiance without the irritation, peeling, or sensitivity associated with retinoids.
- Antioxidant protection: Exhibits potent antioxidant activity, neutralizing free radicals from UV exposure and pollution to help prevent premature aging.
- Soothing and anti-inflammatory: Unlike retinol, bakuchiol possesses inherent anti-inflammatory properties, helping to calm redness and support barrier health while it works.
Why we use it:
We selected bakuchiol as the renewal active in our overnight repair cream for its exceptional efficacy-to-gentleness ratio. At 1% concentration, it delivers the visible results without the compromise of irritation. It also pairs exceptionally well with ceramides and barrier-repair ingredients.
Bakuchiol is not retinol – it is a different molecule with a different mechanism of action. However, clinical studies have demonstrated its comparable efficacy to retinol in improving photoaging, with a significantly superior tolerability profile.
Compatibility: It does not cause photosensitivity, allowing for flexible use in both day and night formulations. We include it in our night cream to align with skin’s circadian repair cycle.
