Glyceryl Stearate

INCI: GLYCERYL STEARATE
Type: Emulsifier, emollient, stabilizer, opacifying agent
Origin: A monoglyceride produced by esterifying glycerin with stearicacid (a fatty acid derived from vegetable oils). It is one of the most traditional and widely used emulsifiers in cosmetic chemistry.
What it does:
Glyceryl Stearate is a versatile, non-ionic emulsifier that has been a cornerstone of stable, elegant emulsion formulations for decades. Primary functions:
- Primary and co-emulsifier: It helps bind oil and water phases into emulsions. While it can function as a primary emulsifier, it is most commonly used in synergy with other emulsifiers (like Polysorbates or Glyceryl Stearate Citrate) to create exceptionally stable and luxurious cream textures.
- Emulsion stabilizer: Reinforces the emulsifier film around oil droplets, preventing coalescence and separation over time and across temperature variations.
- Emollient: Contributes a soft, smooth, non-greasy after-feel to formulations, enhancing the sensory elegance of creams and lotions.
- Opacifying and pearlizing agent: Imparts the characteristic creamy, opaque white appearance associated with rich moisturizers.
Why we use it:
We include Glyceryl Stearate as part of our precision emulsifier system, working in synergy with other emulsifiers and fatty alcohols to create the stable, elegant, and sensorial textures for our products.
Comedogenic rating: Rated 1-2 (low). Generally well-tolerated and non-comedogenic for most skin types.
