Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate

INCI: SODIUM LAUROYL LACTYLATE
Type: Emulsifier, surfactant, skin conditioning
Origin: An amino acid–type emulsifier derived from lauric acid (a fatty acid from coconut or palm kernel oil) and lactic acid (derived from plant sugars via fermentation). A biodegradable, plant-based alternative to conventional emulsifiers.

What it does:

Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate is a mild, biomimetic emulsifier that stabilizes oil-in-water emulsions while actively benefiting the skin. Primary functions:

  1. O/W emulsifier: Creates and stabilizes fine, uniform emulsions. Helps oils and water blend into smooth, luxurious creams that stay stable over time.
  2. Mild surfactant: Possesses gentle cleansing properties. Can help disperse oils and improve rinseability in rinse-off products.
  3. Skin conditioning: The lactate component contributes to hydration and barrier support. It is a recognized component of the skin’s Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMFs).

Why we use it:

We include Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate in our overnight repair cream as a supportive, skin-kind emulsifier. It helps create our rich, stable cream texture while actively respecting the skin barrier.

Derived from renewable plant sources. Its molecular structure resembles natural skin lipids. It’s significantly gentler than conventional emulsifiers – ideal for sensitive, compromised, or barrier-impaired skin.
