Zea Mays Germ Oil
Corn germ oil

INCI: ZEA MAYS GERM OIL
Type: Vegetable oil
Origin: Extracted from the germ (embryo) of corn kernels (Zea mays), often through cold pressing or solvent extraction.
What it does:
Corn germ oil is a nourishing, golden-yellow oil prized for its high vitamin E content and skin-conditioning properties. It functions primarily as a rich emollient and antioxidant carrier.
- Occlusive properties: Helps form a protective, hydrating layer on the skin’s surface to reduce moisture loss.
- Skin conditioning and emollience: Delivers fatty acids and nutrients directly to the skin, softening, smoothing, and improving skin suppleness.
- Antioxidant protection: Exceptionally rich in vitamin E, a potent natural antioxidant that helps protect skin lipids from oxidative damage caused by free radicals.
Why we use it:
Fatty acid profile: It is particularly high in linoleic acid (an omega-6 polyunsaturated fat, ~50-60%) and contains a significant amount of oleic acid (~25-35%). This makes it both nourishing and relatively lightweight.
Comedogenic rating: Rated 3 (moderately comedogenic). Its richness means it is best suited for normal to dry skin types or rinse-off formulations.
We value it for its dual role as a skin-softening emollient and a natural source of stable antioxidants. It helps nourish the skin barrier while contributing to the formula’s overall stability against oxidation.
