Caprylyl Glycol

INCI: CAPRYLYL GLYCOL
Type: Humectant, skin conditioning, preservative booster
Origin: A 1,2-alkanediol derived from caprylic acid (a fatty acid found naturally in coconut and palm kernel oil). Produced via chemical synthesis to high purity standards.
What it does:
Caprylyl Glycol is a multifunctional ingredient that bridges the gap between skincare benefits and formula protection. Primary functions:
- Humectant: Attracts and binds moisture to the skin. Provides light, non-sticky hydration. Improves skin softness and suppleness.
- Preservative booster: Works synergistically with primary preservatives. Enhances antimicrobial efficacy, especially against fungi and yeast. Allows for lower overall preservative concentrations.
- Skin conditioning: Contributes to a smooth, silky after-feel. Improves the sensory elegance of creams and lotions.
- Stabilizer: Helps maintain formula integrity over time. Prevents degradation of sensitive ingredients.
Why we use it:
We include Caprylyl Glycol in our overnight repair cream as a gentle humectant and preservation booster. It’s particularly effective when paired with Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, or Benzyl Glycol. Creates robust, broad-spectrum preservative systems at minimal concentrations.
