Phenoxyethanol

INCI: PHENOXYETHANOL
Type: Preservative, antimicrobial agent
Origin: An organic compound produced via chemical synthesis (reaction between phenol and ethylene oxide). It is not naturally derived but is manufactured to high purity standards for cosmetic use.
What it does:
Phenoxyethanol is a globally approved, broad-spectrum preservative widely regarded as the industry standard for paraben-free preservation systems. Primary functions:
- Broad-spectrum antimicrobial: Effectively inhibits the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and molds, providing comprehensive protection against microbial contamination.
- Formula safety: Ensures water-containing products remain microbiologically stable throughout manufacturing, storage, and the entire period of consumer use.
- Stabilizer: Helps maintain formula integrity by preventing spoilage that could otherwise degrade active ingredients or alter texture.
Why we use it:
We include Phenoxyethanol as part of our responsible preservation strategy. It allows us to ensure the microbiological safety of our water-containing products with a well-understood, globally accepted ingredient at safe, effective concentrations. We pair it with other preservatives (like Sodium Benzoate e Potassium Sorbate) to create a robust, multi-component system that provides comprehensive protection at lower individual concentrations.
Approved for cosmetic use in all major markets, including the EU, with an extensive safety assessment history.
