Sodium Anisate

INCI: SODIUM ANISATE
Type: Natural preservative booster, antimicrobial agent, fragrance ingredient
Origin: The sodium salt of anisic acid, a phenolic compound naturally found in the seeds and essential oil of the star anise plant (Illicium verum) and other plants. It is derived from renewable botanical sources.
What it does:
Sodium Anisate is a gentle, nature-identical multifunctional ingredient valued for its mild preservative-boosting and sensory properties. Primary functions:
- Preservative booster: While not a full preservative on its own, it enhances the efficacy of the primary preservative system, allowing for lower overall preservative concentrations while maintaining robust antimicrobial protection.
- Mild antimicrobial activity: Exhibits some inherent antimicrobial properties, particularly against certain bacteria and fungi, contributing to formula safety.
- Natural fragrance component: Possesses a subtle, sweet, anise-like scent that can contribute to a product’s sensory profile in a gentle, non-irritating manner.
Why we use it:
We include Sodium Anisate as a supportive partner in our preservative system. It is not our primary preservative but a strategic booster that allows us to reduce the concentration of other preservative ingredients while maintaining uncompromised product safety.
Exceptionally gentle and well-tolerated, with an excellent safety profile suitable for sensitive skin. Readily biodegradable and derived from renewable botanical sources.
